The 27-year-old Spanish woman has identified Mohammad Ansari alias Badshah, 28, as the man who had raped her at her flat on Perry Cross Road, Bandra (West), on Monday.
Ansari was identified by the victim during an identification parade that was carried out at the Arthur Road jail on Thursday.
“The victim singled out Ansari from seven to nine similar looking persons, wearing identical clothes. She said she was “100% sure” that Ansari was the person who broke into her Bandra house,” said an officer from Bandra police station, requesting anonymity.
The identification parade was carried out between 11am and 1pm in the presence of an executive magistrate ranked official, the officer added.
Ansari, however, hasn’t confessed to his role in the crime
The police had asked the court for Ansari to be sent to judicial custody on Wednesday to facilitate the identification process. “While we were certain that Ansari was indeed the person who had committed the crime, the victim’s identification has come as a corroboration and has strengthened our case against him,” the officer said.
According to the police, the development will help them establish Ansari as the accused in court once the trial begins.
The officer said the victim wanted to leave for Germany to join her parents, but had stayed in the city just to carry out the identification. “She will leave the country soon,” he said.
The Bandra police will ask the court for Ansari’s police custody on Friday.
The police searched Ansari’s house at Reay Road for the articles he had stolen from the victim’s house. “We didn’t find anything. Once we secure his custody tomorrow, we will interrogate him further about where he has kept the stolen booty,” the officer said..
The police are also awaiting results of the DNA samples found from the victim’s room.
“The forensic science laboratory at Kalina will send the report in another 10 days, which will further help us establish that Ansari is the accused,” the officer said.
