The special anti-extortion squad formed by additional commissioner of police (west region), Amitabh Gupta, arrested four members of the Ravi Pujari gang, allegedly involved in several robberies, on Monday night.
Police said they had received information on the gang and laid a trap near Lokhandwala in Oshiwara, Andheri (west). The police said they have charged the four, who possessed arms, with preparation for robbery.
The accused have been identified as Suresh Nana Patkar (49), Gangadhar Muthu (28), Rajkumar Kanojiya (22) and Vinod Ansari (30). Each one of them is wanted in at least 20 cases registered at police stations across the state.
Police said Patkar, also known as Nana Patekar, allegedly identified potential victims for his gang’s extortion business. Gangster Ashok Chaudhary, whom the special team had arrested earlier, had allegedly recruited the four men.
“They have cases of robbery, dacoity and house break-in theft against them in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Surat,” Gupta said. “We have recovered four vehicles, including a Maruti 800 and Innova cars, from them. They have stolen more than 15 vehicles, which were used to commit crimes.”
Gupta said Rs 1 lakh cash, stolen ornaments and arms have also been recovered.
Police alleged the men were involved in a robbery of Rs 40 lakh in cash and jewellery at Shubham jewellery showroom at Vasai on September 16. They had earlier broken into a house at Dahisar and stolen Rs 5 lakh, the police said.
