An 11-year-old boy died after being hit by a BEST bus on Andheri-Kurla road on Thursday night.

The Andheri police said that Parjan Kersas Wadia, a Class 6 student of Hansraj Morarji Public School in Andheri (West), was returning home from a friend’s place on his bicycle when the speeding bus hit him.

“Around 8.30 pm, Wadia was returning to his residence in Patkibaug, Andheri (East). He was riding a bicycle. When he reached the Vishal Hall building on Andheri-Kurla road, a speeding BEST bus hit him and he fell on top of the metal plates laid in the area for road construction,” said Pradeep Gosavi, senior inspector from the Andheri police station.

The police said that passers-by rushed Wadia to Nanavati hospital. “He was admitted at Nanavati hospital within 25 minutes of the accident. But he was declared dead on admission. He had sustained severe injuries to his head and had suffered a brain haemorrhage that led to his instant death,” said Gosavi.

The BEST bus driver, Ankush Dawle, 51, was arrested from his residence in Rameshwadi, Badlapur, around 1 am on Friday.

He was booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

“Dawle was produced before a magistrate’s court on Friday morning and is currently out on bail. Our investigation is complete,” said Gosavi.

The police clarified that Dawle was not driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred.
