A couple died in a road mishap on Tuesday night after a speeding dumper truck hit their motorbike on the Western Express Highway in Borivli (East).

The deceased have been identified as Lukman Vali Sidpura, 42, and Rubiya Sidpura, 40.

The couple, who resided in Jogeshwari, was headed towards Kashimira. Lukman, a businessman, was riding the bike while his wife was sitting pillion, the police said.

Around 11.30pm, a rashly driven dumper rammed into the couple's motorbike near the Basant Marbles bus stop on the Western Express Highway. Due to the impact of the collision, the couple was thrown off the bike and sustained grievous injuries.

Onlookers caught the driver of the dumper, Arjun Anand Valmiki, and prevented him from fleeing. Other locals rushed the couple to Bhagwati Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

The Kasturba police arrested the driver of the dumper.

"We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the dumper driver. He was produced in court and has been remanded in judicial custody," said Rajendra Thakur, senior police inspector of Kasturba police station.
