The Mulund police, on Saturday, arrested the 25-year-old man who had gone into hiding after slashing a 17-year-old college student in Mulund on Friday.

The accused, Mangesh Deshmukh, was arrested from Wagle Estate in Thane early on Saturday. Deshmukh’s parents helped the police trace him.

The incident took place on Friday around 12.30pm at Bhakti Marg in Mulund (West) when Deshmukh approached the victim and asked her to marry him. When he grabbed the girl’s hand, she slapped him. Incensed, Deshmukh slashed her with the knife he had brought along.

Deshmukh told the police that he and the victim had been in love for a few years. But, of late the victim had started avoiding him, which forced him to commit the crime.
