While confusion over whether the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage from the Vidhan Bhavan could be of any help in identifying those who assaulted police sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi on March 19 prevails, the problem is likely to get solved in the next few months.

The Vidhan Bhavan secretariat plans to install 118 CCTV cameras inside the legislature building and premises as part of the upgradation of its surveillance network. Though the plan was mooted much earlier, the installation is likely to be expedited in the wake of the incident.

After the fire that gutted the top three floors of

the Mantralaya, the legislative secretariat had appointed a committee comprising a

technical expert from Hyderabad. The decision of installing 118 CCTVs, apart from the 28 already in place, across the Vidhan Bhavan premises was taken based on the committee’s suggestions.

“The proposal was sent to the department concerned much before the attack on the police officer. As we need a lot of money for the installation, we have decided to go ahead with the plan in phases,” said a top official from the secretariat, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
