A 24-year-old state-level boxer allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her flat in Chembur on Friday night, reportedly after being depressed due to failures in her career.

The police have identified her as Priyanka Belkade. She was found hanging at the HPCL staff quarters in Chembur. Her father Digamber, an HPCL employee, was in his native town in Akola when it happened. Police said Rita Tayade, her sister, first saw her body when she returned from shopping in the evening.

Initial police investigations revealed that Priyanka had been living with her father since 2009. Shirish Shelke, a senior police inspector with the RCF police station, Chembur, said her father, in his statement, has said she was depressed since she had failed to establish herself in her professional career.

Police also learnt that Priyanka had abandoned her training due to the depression. Her sister Komal (21) is also a professional boxer.

Bharat Wavan, executive secretary of the Maharashtra Boxing Association, said: “She (Priyanka) was not a top-level boxer, she participated only in state-level events. Her sister Komal is a better boxer and has participated at the national level.”

“She is from Akola, and moved to Mumbai a year ago, after which she had stopped practising. I’m not sure what went wrong and forced her to do something this drastic,” he added.
