Fast tracking insurance claims in Motor Accident Claims Tribunals (MACT), of accident victims who die in motor vehicle mishaps, is now on the state government’s radar.

“An amendment will be made in the motor vehicle insurance rules to ensure victims get immediate compensation and do not have to go through a process that takes more than two years,” said Satej Patil, minister of state for home.

Patil was addressing the legislative council about a June 8 accident in Nagpur where a trailer ran over 14 people, killing them. Legislator Hemant Takle said no compensation had reached their families.

When an accident takes place, a case is registered by the local police. In a criminal case of death due to negligence, Rs50,000 is paid and Rs25,000 is paid for death due to injury. When potholes prove to be a reason for the accident the state public works department (PWD) gets involved “We will ask the PWD to fill in all the potholes on such roads. We will bring in amends in the rules to increase compensation and to make the process and coordination between departments easier,” Patil said.
