The crime branch, which is investigating the cause of the fire at Mantralaya - whether it was accident or sabotage - has so far recorded the statements of 30 eyewitnesses. Fifteen statements were recorded on Sunday, Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said.

Sources in the crime branch said the focus of their investigation was the fourth floor, where the fire originated. "The probe includes checking of CCTV footage, forensic evidence, statements of the witnesses and circumstantial evidence, through which we will be able to ascertain if the fire was accident or sabotage," an official said on condition of anonymity.

The police will gradually look at all four floors that caught fire.

In all, 40 officials will be involved in the investigation, which will be headed by an assistant commissioner of police and a deputy commissioner of police. The inquiry is being monitored daily by Roy and Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner of police.

Officials said forensic lab has employed extra manpower from other centres and collected all possible samples to assist the inquiry.
