A middle school student (name withheld) of Canossa Convent School in Mahim is battling for life in hospital after she fell from the school building’s second floor on Tuesday afternoon.

There were conflicting reports whether is was an accident or a case of attempted suicide.

“There was an accident but I do not wish to talk to the media about this,” said Sister Clarin, the school’s manager.

The girl’s father did not wish to speak on the matter. “This is not the right time to speak,” he said, when contacted at Hinduja Hospital where his daughter is being treated.

Despite repeated attempts, Dr Sanjay Agarwal, who is treating the student, refused to provide details on her medical condition.

The student is a resident of Sitaladevi Road in Mahim. “She is a brilliant girl, very happy go lucky,” said another parent.

Parents of other students, who refused to be identified, claimed that the girl had excused herself from class on the pretext of going to the toilet around noon on Tuesday, and then jumped from the second floor of the building. Unconfirmed reports suggest that she came from a troubled home.

No police complaint has been filed in the matter. Some parents said the girl had written a suicide note suggesting there had been tension at home, however, this could not be verified.

“There does not seem to have been any negligence on the part of the school,” said another parent.

The school was shut on Wednesday for Republic Day and again on Thursday, which is a weekly off. The school manager confirmed that there had been an accident but declined to comment further.
