A 63-year-old woman fell to her death from the window of her seventh floor apartment in Andheri (west) on Sunday afternoon. The police said that while prima facie investigations suggest it might be a case of suicide, they are not ruling out that it could have been an accident.
The police said the deceased, Renuka Azwani, used to live alone in Sagar Sanjog building at Four Bungalows in Andheri (west).
“Azwani was a spinster and had been living at the apartment with her mother for over two decades. After her mother passed away six years ago, she became depressed. She was also a diabetic,” said senior inspector Nandkumar Mhetar.
Her brother, Shyam Azwani, who lives at Worli with his family, was taking care of Azwani’s expenses, the police said.
The incident occurred at around 2.15 pm on Sunday. “A woman staying in a building opposite saw her standing on a stool and climbing on to the window. She immediately informed the police who rushed a mobile police van to the spot,” said Mhetar.
The police said the building’s security guards first heard a woman scream, followed by a loud thud. When they rushed to the spot, they found her lying on the floor, bleeding profusely.
“The police van took her to Cooper hospital. But she was declared dead on admission,” said Mhetar.
The police said the door of Azwani’s house was locked from inside and after opening it, they found a stool next to the window.
“Based on preliminary investigations and her brother’s statement, we have registered a case of accidental death,” he said.
