A four-year-old kindergarten student was allegedly raped by the school supervisor inside the toilet of the school in Bhandup last Tuesday. The school authorities remained unavailable for comment.
“On December 9, the accused took the child to the toilet and assaulted her sexually. After the incident, the girl refused to attend school for the next two days. The child also complained of abdominal pain,” said Pratap Chavan, senior police inspector, Bhandup police station.
When her grandmother asked her the reason behind the sudden change in her behaviour, she narrated the incident. She was taken to a local civic-run hospital in Bhandup, from where she was sent to the Rajawadi hospital for medical examination, said the police.
The case was filed on Wednesday morning, after which the police arrested the accused.
The incident led to protests from residents, who burned benches in the school on Wednesday morning.
Jayesh Mirani, president, NGO All Maharashtra Human Rights Welfare Association, alleged delay by the police in filing the case. The police, however, refuted the allegation, stating the girl was sent for medical examination and swift action was taken.
The police are checking the antecedents of the accused and whether he has committed similar acts in the past. A case has been registered against the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 354 (a) (sexual harassment), 376 (rape) and sections 4 (penetrative sexual assault), 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
