The sessions court on Monday transferred the custody of two alleged Naxalites — Vernon Gonsalves and Shridhar Shrivnivasan — to Surat police after the latter filed an application, seeking their custody.

"The court has transferred their custody to Surat police," said special ATS prosecutor Dileep Shah. The Surat police had filed an application in May saying they had arrested 11 alleged Naxalites. They application said the duo helped promoting Maoism in the state.

The duo allegedly conducted three secret meetings to promote Naxalite activities in Surat.

"They were also coordinating to recruit more people," Shah said.

People once inducted, were given different names and were known only by these pseudonyms and it was not possible to de-code these names unless Gonsalves and Shrinivasan were interrogated, the police said.
