A man in his twenties, allegedly drinking and driving, ran over a two-year-old boy in a congested lane in Govandi late on Tuesday. The toddler, Mohammed Imran, did not survive.
Eyewitnesses said the incident took place as Imran was crossing the street to go to a shop and buy sweets. “Everyday after reaching home at night, I used to give Imran a rupee or two to buy sweets,” said Imran’s father Ashfaq Ahmed (30), a carpenter.
Ramesh Yadav (26) said he was buying cigarettes when Imran was run over. “A few of us dragged the two men out of the Scorpio. We were about to beat them when they offered take the boy to a hospital,” he said. “They were stinking of alcohol.”
Imran’s uncle Rizwan Ahmed (26) said the boy was rushed to Vikas Nursing Home. “The doctor told us to take him to Rajawadi Hospital as he had serious injuries,” Ahmed said. The boy was taken in the accused’s SUV to Rajawadi, where he was pronounced dead. “Before we realised, the two escaped,” said Ahmed.
Imran’s family then told the police, who later detained two other men who had been drinking with the duo. “In their statement, the two men said that all four of them had a drinking party before the accident,” said D.S. Jodgujari, senior police inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station.
Both the accused have been booked for causing death due to negligence. The police will use the their friends’ statements to support the allegation that the two accused were drunk and to prove the charge of negligence.
The duo has not yet been traced.
