A 40-year-old woman was killed by her husband at Shivaji Nagar early on Sunday morning. He suspected that she was having an extra-marital affair, the police said.

The accused, Suryakant Shivappa Koli, 50, an autorickshaw driver, slit his own throat immediately after and his condition is critical, the police said.

According to the police, the deceased, Malamma Suryakant Koli, who worked as a household help, lived with her husband and three children – two daughters and a son – at Bainganwadi road in Shivaji Nagar.

The police said that while the deceased and her family lived on the first floor of the chawl, the room on the ground floor was occupied by Rupa Govardhan Mishra, who on Sunday morning, heard the couple having a heated argument.

After a while, she saw drops of blood fall on the floor of her house through the crevices in the wooden ceiling above.

“Mishra summoned a neighbour and rushed to their residence at around 6.30 am. She found Suryakant and Malamma lying unconscious in a pool of blood. Both their throats were slit,” said senior inspector, Radhesham Agarwal, Shivaji Nagar police station.

The duo was rushed to Sion hospital where Malamma was declared dead at arrival.
