In a posh ten-storey high-rise in Lokhandwala, Saturday night became a nightmare when Arunkumar Tikku’s body marred with several stab wounds and a wire tied around his neck was discovered on his bathroom floor.

The two prime suspects, his paying guests, are absconding. Police said they were also investigating the role of Tikku’s son, Anuj, a television actor, who lived in the same apartment. They police have not yet traced Anuj’s whereabouts.

Police said that the suspects had escaped from the bathroom window.

The 62-year-old Delhi-based businessman owned three flats in Samartha Aangan – 3A, all of which are interconnected. He would shuttle between Mumbai and Delhi. Police said that a resident of the building had alerted them. “The resident noticed the victim (Tikku) banging on the window of his first floor apartment and went to the flat with the security guard,” said said Dilip Rupwate, the senior inspector at Oshiwara police station.

On reaching there, the resident found two young men in the apartment. While one opened the door, the other was lying on the bed covered with a sheet. When questioned, the two men revealed that they were paying guests who lived there for Rs30,000 a month.

“I noticed that the feet of the man beneath the sheet were stained with blood. When I asked them about it, they panicked and asked me to leave. They said that the man on the bed had suffered from a bout of fits,” an eyewitness, who did not want to reveal his name, told HT. “I got suspicious and stationed two guards at the main door and called the police.”

The police arrived soon broke the door down when they did not get any response to their repeated knocks. “When we entered the bathroom, we saw that Tikku was lying on the bathroom floor with stab wounds on his stomach. He was naked below the waist and the knife was lying on the floor next to his body. Besides, there was a computer wire tied tightly around his neck,” said Rupwate.
