A builder was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Vittawa subway in Kalwa on Tuesday afternoon.
Airoli resident Deepak Patil, 40, was taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, but he had died en route.
On Tuesday, Patil had come to the Thane court either for a hearing or to get the next date because he is an accused in the murder of Navi Mumbai Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Devidas Chougule in 2007, the police said.
"Patil was on his way to Rabale in his Scorpio with eight to 10 people, when another Scorpio blocked their car near Vittawa subway. Three to four men got off the vehicle and fired four rounds at Patil's Scorpio with a .9 mm pistol or revolver," said Dattatray Mandlik, deputy commissioner of police (zone I).
"Patil got out of his vehicle and tried to escape but the assailants followed him and pumped two bullets into his head. The assailants fled, leaving their vehicle behind. It was a well-planned attack,” Mandlik added.
The police have recovered choppers, rods and a revolver from the assailants’ vehicle.
Kiran Chaure, who was travelling with Patil, too was injured in the firing. He has been admitted to a private hospital in Airoli.
While sources said gangster Sujit Sutar could be involved in the murder, the police have refused to reveal any names.
"The motive seems to be previous enmity as both the accused and the deceased have criminal records. We do not want to disclose any names as of now as that will alert them," said Mandlik.
