A 15-year-old from Tamil Nadu allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself in his uncle’s godown at Deonar.
Breejit Fernandes and his brother Prashant (19) had come to the city nine months ago in search for jobs.
The police said while Prashant had got a job two months ago at a private company in Navi Mumbai, Breejit had failed to find one.
The statement that the boy’s brother and relatives gave the police reveals that Breejit was feeling homesick for the last few days and wanted to return home. The police suspect this might have led him to take the extreme step.
The brothers stayed with their four uncles, all of whom own provision stores.
“Breejit often helped them at their stores and slept at night there or at the nearby godowns,” said Assistant Police Inspector Balasaheb Shirke of the Deonar police station. “On Monday after dinner, the teenager went to my godown to sleep,” said Anthony.
The next morning, when Anthony reached the godown he called out to Breejit to open the shutter. But when he did not get any response despite repeated calling out to him, Anthony peeped in through the window and found him hanging by a rope from a hook on the ceiling. He was taken to Rajawadi hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead before admission.
