Police on Thursday arrested a teenager in connection with the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in suburban Kurla and claimed to have cracked one of the three cases of such crime against minor girls in the area.
Javed Rehman Shaikh (19), working with a local cable operator, was arrested from his residence in suburban Kurla and produced before Vikhroli magistrate who remanded him to police custody till July 14.
Javed was nabbed in connection with rape and murder of the eight-year-old girl who was found dead in a house near Balwadi in Vatsalatai Nagar slums of Kurla on June 19, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said adding his DNA sample matched with that of the victim's body and DNA samples obtained from the crime scene.
On February 9, the body of a five-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered, was found in a drain in Nehru Nagar. On March 7, a nine-year-old girl was found raped and murdered on the terrace of a building in Nehru Nagar police quarters. "The culprit involved in these two cases is yet to be traced," he added.
However, police did not rule out Javed's involvement in the other two cases. "Javed might have aided the accused in other two cases. We are probing his role in these two cases also," Dayal said.
The rape and murder of the three minor girls in the same area of Kurla since February this year had created fear among residents of the area.
