A 16-year-old student died in Bhiwandi on Wednesday after he accidentally crashed into an electricity pole, fell from the bus he was travelling in and came under its wheels.

According to his co-passengers, he was leaning out of the bus as he prepared to alight at his stop. He was rushed to the civic hospital in Bhiwandi, where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to the police, the victim Areef Abdul Samad Momon and the complainant Arees Abdul Samad Momon are twins and residents of Bhoiwada.

They were first year students of civil engineering at Alamuri Ratnamala Institute of Engineering and Technology (ARMIET) in Shahapur, Thane.

The brothers would use the college bus service to reach the institute every day. “The college bus picked them up at 6.15am from their residence. On their way back home, they would take the bus at 3.30pm,” said DD Barge, sub-inspector, Shanti Nagar police station.

After attending their lectures on Wednesday, they boarded the college bus, which made several stops to drop students from Shahapur to Bhiwandi.

“At 4.35pm, the bus was moving from Vanjarpati naka to Dharmankar naka in Bhiwandi. Areef was standing near the front door, as he wanted to get off the bus at his stop. He was leaning out of the bus, and was suddenly hit by an electricity pole on the road,” said Barge.

Areef fell off the bus because of the impact and came under the moving wheel at the rear end of the bus.

His brother Arees registered a case against the driver, claiming the latter should have slowed down after his brother fell off.

“We have registered a case based on the statement of the victim’s brother and are investigating,” said Barge.

The driver has been booked by the Nizampura police under section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
