Two women who were on their way to pick their children from school were injured after they were knocked down by a speeding Qualis driven by a teenager near SIWS College in Wadala on Wednesday.
The teenager was on a joyride and driving without a licence.
The accused, Ravi Aware, 19, a resident of Sion, was arrested by the police. Aware and his friend, who was also seated in the vehicle were thrashed by the public and handed over to the Matunga police.
The incident occurred on the road near the college around 11.30am. The Qualis initially crashed into a stationary Santro, following which it suddenly veered to the left and knocked down the two women who were crossing the road. They were later identified as Shahnaz Shaikh and Shabnam Siddique.
“The Qualis belonged one of Aware’s friends. Aware asked him for the keys and quickly drove away in the vehicle even though he did not have a licence and did not know how to drive. He picked up his friend and while driving knocked down the two women,” said Balasaheb Kakad, senior inspector, Matunga police station.
Shahnaz was dragged some distance from the impact and sustained an injury to her head. She has been admitted to Sion hospital. Shabnam too sustained scratches on her body and has been admitted in KEM hospital. “A CT-scan was conducted and they are being treated,” said Atulkumar Landage, sub-inspector, Matunga police station.
The accused tried to flee but they were caught by passers-by and handed over to the police. The Matunga police have registered a case in this regard against Aware.
