A 19-year-old student was arrested on Saturday for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a senior citizen.

The police said Piyush Nagais committed the crime to fund a habit of playing online lottery.

Piyush, a student of Mother Terresa College, located in Malwani, Malad (West), originally hails from Rajasthan.

His father, Ashok Nagais, works as a tempo driver, while his mother is a housewife. The family stays at Nivrutti Maitri Park at Dindoshi.

On Friday, Piyush allegedly snatched a gold chain from a senior citizen, while she was walking near her residence in Dindoshi. The victim filed a complaint and based on a tip- off, the police laid a trap and arrested Piyush.

“Piyush has been arrested for theft and has been remanded to police custody,” said senior inspector Vinayak Kakade of Dindoshi police station.

During interrogation, Nagais allegedly told the police that he had taken to crime because he was addicted to playing online lottery. As he was a student and his parents could not give him money for playing lottery, he started snatching chains to generate money. “We are trying to find out if he committed any similar offences in the past,” added Kakade.
