An 18-year-old boy who was driving a relative’s SUV, without a valid driving licence, lost control of the vehicle and hit three pedestrians in Bhatwadi area at Ghatkopar (West).
The Ghatkopar police said the victims sustained minor injuries in the incident and that they were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital for medication. The boy has been arrested and will be produced in a holiday court on Sunday.
Police said the incident took place around 8 pm while the motorist, identified as Anant Bhasade, was speeding in his Tavera on the crowded road at Barve Nagar in Bhatwadi area. Bhasade was allegedly trying his hand at the wheel as he was still learning to drive, when he lost control and first brushed past a man who was crossing the road.
Bhasade panicked and sped ahead where he lost control of the SUV and hit two more people before bringing the vehicle to a halt.
The locals rushed to the spot and caught Bhasade, who lives in the same area. They informed the police and rushed the injured trio to the hospital. A preliminary probe revealed that the three escaped with minor injuries. “None of the victims have sustained fractures. We are still in the process of ascertaining if Bhasade’s family knew he had taken the car keys and left,” said Ram Mandurke, senior inspector of Ghatkopar police.
The police said no case of negligence would be registered against the owner of the car. “As the injured have sustained minor bruises, we won’t register a case against the owner of the vehicle,” Mandurke said.
“Prima facie, it seems that Bhasade was not drunk, but tests will be conducted to ascertain if he was. He was driving his uncle’s car without a licence. We have arrested him and informed his family,” said Ram Mandurke, senior inspector at Ghatkopar police. The police have seized the vehicle and further probe is underway.
