The Kandivli police arrested a 19-year-old boy for robbing jewellery from his work place and gifting it to his girlfriend.
Santosh Sahane used to work in a jewellery manufacturing unit in Kandivli. He stole valuables worth Rs 10 lakh in a month. Santosh’s father Dattaram Sahane has been working in the factory for almost 19 years. Santosh had just given his Class 12 exams.
The police said Santosh’s job was to note the number of items manufactured in a day and assess the number of diamonds used in the jewellery.
As soon as he was appointed, he reportedly started stealing items. After a month, he stopped going to work. The theft was discovered when an assessment was done. A complaint was registered at Kandivli police station.
The police found that jewellery went missing while Santosh was working. The company staff tried calling the accused but he refused saying he had got another job.
Police detained him on Monday and Santosh confessed to his crime. He was then arrested and booked under sections 381 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code.
Expensive mobile phones and other accessories that he had gifted to two of his friends were recovered. Santosh has been remanded to police custody for three days.
DCP Sanjay Banerjee said, “Santosh was a spendthrift and wanted to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. We are investigating if any other person was involved in the theft.”
