A 23-year-old tempo driver was arrested on Saturday for allegedly abusing and beating a police constable of Yellow Gate police station.

According to the police, at the time of the incident, Constable Suryakant Pawar (48) was controlling the incoming traffic of trucks and heavy motor vehicles near the Bharat Petrol Pump at Bhau-cha-Dhakka in Mazagaon.

A police officer said the incident occurred around 8.30 am when Pawar was directing the vehicles for smooth traffic flow.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Sufiyan Siddiqui, tried to overtake a truck and blocked the road, which created a traffic jam leading several vehicles to queue up.

Pawar went to Siddiqui, a resident of Kherwadi, and asked him to park his vehicle on the side of the road to show his driving licence.

“The accused got annoyed and before Pawar could talk any further, Siddiqui came out of his tempo and abused and thrashed the police officer,” said Chandrakant Naik, senior police inspector of Yellow Gate police station.

Siddiqui was booked for endangering life or personal safety of others (under Section 336) and criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty(Section 353) of the Indian Penal Code.

He has been remanded in police custody till Monday.
