Chaos ruled the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) general body meeting on Tuesday after more than thirty proposals were approved forcefully by holding the municipal secretary by his collar. This was done after the meeting broke into pandemonium when the opposition refused to approve a proposal to shift an existing crematorium to make way for a road.

The civic administration had tabled a proposal to shift an existing crematorium at Kasarvadavli to an adjoining amenity plot because the crematorium was blocking the road to be developed, according to the developmental plan (DP).

Opposition leader Hanumant Jagdale, however, said, “The road was in the DP. So why does the corporation want to shift the crematorium suddenly? Moreover, the crematorium cannot be shifted under the amenity law unless the state gives approval for the same, according to high court directives. The proposal seems to favour a developer.”

The opposition demanded that the high court order on getting approval for the crematorium to be shifted to an amenity plot should be read out in the house. However, mayor Sanjay More refused to read it out and approved the proposal. This enraged the opposition. Jagdale got up from his chair and sat on the floor in front of the dais. He was followed by other NCP and Congress corporators, who sat on the floor and shouted anti-mayor slogans.

NCP corporator Najib Mulla and Congress corporator Manoj Shinde climbed up the dais and stopped municipal secretary Manish Joshi from reading out the meeting agenda and demanded the crematorium proposal be discussed first. The mayor suspended both of them for 15 minutes, but instead of backing off, they pulled the mayor’s chair making him lose his balance.

The Shiv Sena corporators then joined the commotion and pushed the Opposition back and held Joshi by his collar and forced him to read the entire agenda. The Sena corporators refused to let him go until the entire agenda was read. Thirty proposals on the agenda were read and approved in five minutes without any discussion on the same.
