Thane corporator held for assaulting civic official

The Kalwa police arrested a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Friday evening for allegedly assaulting a civic official who carried out the demolition of an illegal construction in Kalwa.

Ghanashyam Thorat, assistant municipal commissioner, Kalwa has registered a case of attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and assault of a public servant to deter him from discharge of duty among others against corporator Manohar Salvi, also the former mayor, at the Kalwa police station.

Salvi has been remanded to police custody till Sunday.

On Thursday, Thorat had sent a squad to Janakinagar near Manisha Nagar, Kalwa to demolish an illegal construction at Someshwar chawl. When the squad started its work, the corporator asked them to stop. The squad, however, refused to listen to him and continued their work. Salvi then reportedly called Thorat, who did not answer his call. Enraged, he went to the ward office to meet Thorat, where he allegedly slapped and assaulted him.
