A 29-year-old drunk police constable got into an argument with four youngsters, slapped them and also threatened them with his service revolver in the middle of a road in Thane on Friday. The policeman, Mangesh Kanjane, 29, has been arrested and an inquiry has been initiated.

Kanjane is posted as the bodyguard of Shiv Sena MLA Rupesh Mhatre. The incident took place around 9.45pm, when four youngsters — Som Khot, 21, Dipesh Deshmukh, 27, Krishna Devlekar, 23, and Harshal Khot, 22 — were heading towards an ice-cream parlour on two motorcycles near Uthalsar lake in Rabodi.

“We noticed the rider of a motorbike heading towards us was losing control over his vehicle. We stopped our bikes. Kanjane, who was riding pillion, got off the bike and slapped Devlekar. When I tried to intervene, the constable pointed his revolver at me and also at Devlekar,” said Khot.

“He got into a police van passing by and started threatening and abusing us from the jeep. We went to the police station with him and registered a case,” said Deshmukh.

“Kanjane’s medical reports show he was under the influence of alcohol. He has a record of indiscipline,” said a senior officer.
