A 16-year-old girl was killed, while her father critically injured after a 22-year-old man stabbed them at their Mumbra residence on Monday. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Zahir Abdul Sattar Khan, the victim’s maternal cousin.
Zahir, a Nashik resident, had earlier approached the family with a marriage proposal for the girl, but was refused, police said.
“The victim’s family had visited the accused in Nashik a week before. There, Zahir had asked for the girl’s hand in marriage. However, the girl’s family rejected the proposal. The accused then planned revenge,” said SM Mundhe, senior inspector, Mumbra police station.
Around 1:30pm on Monday, Zahir knocked on their house and when the 16-year-old opened the door, he stabbed her several times, said the victim’s younger sister, an eyewitness.
“Hearing her scream, the girl’s father came running to the door. The accused then stabbed him too,” said Mundhe.
“The girl and her father were first taken to Shivaji hospital in Kalwa, where she was declared dead. Later, her father was transferred to Jupiter hospital in Thane,” Mundhe added.
Arif Khan, 40, is in a critical condition. The Amrut Nagar resident works in South Africa and had come to India a few months ago, police said.
According to the police, Zahir had first called the family to confirm who was available in the house.
The police have formed two teams to look for the accused. While one is searching across Mumbra and Kalyan, the other team has left for Nashik. They are also trying to trace the mobile phone of the accused, police said.
The police have also recorded the statement of all the family members and neighbours.
The Mumbra police station have registered a case under section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
