Brutalised but unbowed, the 22-year-old photojournalist repeatedly said this to her family and a small circle of close friends in hospital on Saturday: "Thank you for the support, I will be fine."

"She is absolutely in command of the situation and completely coherent," said a close family friend.

The family has refused to address the media and the photojournalist's mother has impressed upon hospital staff and senior police officers that her daughter's "privacy should be protected at all costs".

"She is strong and she will come through, we will come through all this," the mother told the family friend.

This, she said, is typical of her daughter, who is known to family and friends as a "quiet, extremely strong but sensitive person".

On Thursday, when she was surrounded by the five men in the deserted mill, the photojournalist had received a call from her mother.

With a broken beer bottle held to her neck she had not only answered the phone but had also spoke calmly, pretending nothing was wrong.
