Social activist Anna Hazare might have left the city, but he will re-enter a Chembur building accompanied by actor Kareena Kapoor on Saturday night.

At a New Year’s Eve party, where the theme for the night is ‘The Big Headliners of 2011’, Dinesh Gajria, 44, will show up as Hazare, while his daughter will channel her inner Bollywood diva by dressing up as ‘Chhammak Chhallo’.

“This year has been very eventful for the country. From Bollywood to politics, the country made headlines,” said Gajria, a businessman, who has invited close friends and relatives for the party. “We will play popular Bollywood tracks and organise a fashion parade,” added Gajria, a Chembur resident.

Preparations are on in full swing even at the Kadam household in Malad, where the family will ring in the New Year in true Bollywood retro style. “From oversized glares to marigold garlands, everyone will be dressed to suit the theme. This is the first time we decided to organise a theme party because it is going to be a big family get together,” said Pooja Kadam, 23, an assistant film director. “We are also setting up a bonfire outside our bungalow,” she added.

While several Mumbaiites decided to ring in the New Year outside the city, some others will be spending it in the comfort of their own homes or at hired beachside bungalows.

For Amrita Shetty, 22, this New Year will be spent with her close friends at a rented bungalow in Manori. “Since most of my friends started working this year, we hardly got to spend time with each other. So, we decided to pitch in some money to rent a bungalow,” said Shetty. “Since India’s victory in the world cup is the biggest event of the year, we chose cricket as the party theme. Everyone has to come dressed in blue and we are hoping to catch up on a match late in the night,” she added.

At the city’s five-star hotels and lounges, parties are themed around tourist destinations. While ‘Spain Viva La Fiesta’ is the theme in Lalit Intercontinental Hotel, an Amsterdam-themed party will be held at the Tryst Lounge in Phoenix Mills.
