Even though the civic body has decided to conduct a survey of all trees in the city, which have been listed 'unhealthy', there is still no clarity on the use of the term 'unhealthy'.

The tree census of 2008 had a list of dead trees in the city.

"We have started collating information about all the unhealthy trees. Once out, we will then be inviting experts to conduct the survey. We will begin the survey within a month's time and the time taken to complete the survey will depend on the number of trees," said Suhas Karvande, deputy municipal commissioner.

Tree authority member Niranjan Shetty said there was a need for more scientific pruning of trees.

"We have been demanding that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation make new guidelines for maintaining as well as pruning of trees. Once that is done, a major part of the problem will be solved."

There are over 19 lakh trees in the city, of which more than 33,000 are dead.
