The Centre has issued an alert to the Mumbai police and its state counterparts highlighting an imminent threat of youths being indoctrinated by terror outfits and used to carry out strikes. In the backdrop of four Kalyan youngsters travelling to Syria last year to join the Islamic State, officials have been asked to step up vigil to curb such incidents in the future.
“The social media laboratory has been alerted to keep a tab on online activity. The officials of the special branch are also keeping a tab on places where youth could be tutored or brainwashed,” said a senior officer of the Mumbai police.
Although there is no specific alert of a terror attack in Mumbai, officials said they are being vigilant about tourist spots and foreign installations, such as the Chabad House, which were targeted during the 26/11 attacks in 2008.
The anti-terror cells, which are now in every police station in the city, are gathering local level intelligence and senior inspectors of all the 93 police stations have been asked to conduct security audits in their areas.
