Three people were killed and one injured in three accidents over the weekend.

A motorcyclist was run over by a BEST bus when he tried to overtake a trailer at Govandi on Sunday.

Vidyavihar resident Rajesh Kurme (26), who was not wearing a helmet, suffered head injuries and died on the spot. The Govandi police arrested bus driver Sambhaji Shinde (35), a Nerul resident, on charges of death due to negligence.

Kurme was speeding down the 15-feet wide PL Lokhande Marg. A trailer loaded with iron rods was parked at the roadside. “Kurme tried to pass from between the bus and trailer” said inspector Subhash Shinde.

The police will also charge the trailer driver as the vehicle was parked in a no parking zone.

Kurme’s body has been sent for postmortem as the police suspect he was drunk while driving.

In another accident, a man was killed and another seriously injured when they were hit by a motorcycle, while crossing a road near Mahalaxmi temple on Sunday. Vinod Rathod (32) and Vilas Kadam (43) were both BMC employees.

Rathod’s head smashed against a divider due to which he died on the spot. Kadam is undergoing treatment at Nair hospital. The police have detained the pillion rider of the two-wheeler but the driver is absconding.

The third casualty was Atmaram Thorat (50), a labourer who was killed after he was hit by a Maruti 800 on Saturday in Borivli (East). The driver, Salil Pardhi (21), was arrested for rash and negligent driving.

“He had accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes,” said senior inspector Rajendra Thakur of the Kasturba Marg police station.

Thorat was rushed to Bhagwati hospital but was declared dead before admission.
