The Bandra police arrested three persons, including a female office bearer of a political party, for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 16-year-old girl on Thursday. The accused also tried to force the girl into marriage with her neighbour, the police said.
According to the police, the victim was a student residing in the Maharashtra Nagar area of Bandra (West). The accused were her neighbours and have been identified as Abid Arif Hussain Shaikh, 19, his mother Rabiya Shaikh, 45, and Nisara Hussain Ali Ahamad Shaikh, 37. Nisara, the police said, is the office bearer of a political party.
The police said that according to the victim’s complaint, the trio had been pressurising her since a long time to marry Abid despite her rejecting the proposal on several occasions.
On Tuesday afternoon, the accused, along with a few others, picked up the victim from her residence and brought her to Abid’s residence in the neighbourhood. They then threatened the victim and asked her to marry Abid. They also forcibly applied the bridal henna on her hands.
Some neighbours who witnessed the accused taking the girl to their house, informed her parents. The victim’s family then filed a case of kidnapping against the accused.
“The accused were held under Indian Penal Code sections 363 for kidnapping, 366 for kidnapping, abducting or inducing a woman to compel her marriage and 34 for common intention. After being produced before a metropolitan court, they were released on bail,” said an official from the Bandra police station.
