A 31-year-old man, Mahesh Shetty, a resident of Worli, drowned in the Banganga tank at Malabar Hill, while he was performing the last rites on the 13th day following the death of his father.

According to the police, Mahesh apparently stepped on some moss that had grown on the steps of the Banganga tank and fell into the water. He did not know to swim and by the time his brother and other locals got to him, he had already drowned.

He and his brother had gone to Banganga to perform the last rites of their father.

Meanwhile, in Alibaug, two persons, including a 4-year-old girl, drowned and two others went missing after a fishing trawler apparently collided with a sunken ship.

The incident happened when some devotees were returning from Khanderi-Underi forts off Alibaug coast.

“While returning from the forts, the fishing trawler — Bhawani Mata — apparently collided with a sunken ship and was shattered in the rough weather,” assistant police inspector DV Patil attached to Alibaug taluka police station told the Hindustan Times.

The police officer added that a total of nine persons were travelling in the fishing trawler out of whom five were rescued by another fishing trawler.
