The Charkop police arrested three members of a a gang, which carried out at least 20 robberies across the city. The police said the gang of seven would commit robberies after conducting a thorough recce of the area they wanted to target by posing as scrap dealers. They would then carry out the theft on the same night.
The arrested men have been identified as Mohamed Salim Shaikh, 24, Surendra Pandey, 30 and Mohamed Salim Khan, 30, all residents of Mumbra. The gang was active in Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the police said.
"The men would pose as scrap dealers during the day and scrutinise the area they planned to target. The same night they would return with a tempo and carry out the crime," said Pravin Patil, police inspector of Charkop police station.
The trio was produced in the court and has been remanded to police custody. The police further said the gang has over 20 cases of robberies and house break-in thefts registered.
The police said the accused were involved in a house robbery in the Charkop area of Kandivli (West).
The accused had tied the hands and legs of the on duty watchman and robbed valuables worth Rs 5.5lakh on April 2. Based on the description given by the building’s watchman, the police had prepared the sketches of the accused.
