A 25-year-old cashier at a petrol pump, who helped two of his friends withdraw cash from a stolen credit card, was arrested on Monday. The accused, Altaf Kutubuddin Dole, 25 after being interrogated, led the police to the other two accused, Sikandar Khan alias Hussain, 18, and another 17-year-old boy.
“Hussain and the 17-year-old, who were involved in a case of bag snatching in October, knew Dole as they hailed from the same locality in Mumbra. Dole told them he would be able to swipe a stolen credit or debit card at the Virani Automobiles petrol pump in Mumbra where he was employed.
On December 29, Khan along with the 17-year-old accused, who were on a bike, snatched a bag belonging to Laura Nadar seated in an autorickshaw in the Mulund East area,” said police sub inspector, AS Sawant of Navghar police station.
The accused sped to Dole’s petrol pump at Mumbra where he swiped the card twice for Rs 3,000 and Rs 1,580.
Dole handed over the total stolen amount of Rs 4,580 to the two accused, from his daily collection at the petrol pump.
After swiping the card, Dole did not make entries of cash payments made by other customers during the day until he collected the total amount stolen.
Therefore, the manager did not notice anything unusual.
The police reached the Virani petrol pump after checking the records of where the stolen card was used.
“When we questioned Dole about the accused, he denied seeing anyone of that description having swiped their card at the petrol pump.
However, the credit card records stated that a transaction had taken place at the petrol pump when Dole was on duty, which made us suspicious,” said Sawant.
“We checked the CCTV cameras where we saw a person who matched the description of the accused handing over a card to Dole, who later swiped it at the counter,” added Sawant.
“We interrogated Dole who confessed to his part in the crime and also told us about Khan and the 17-year-old who were later arrested,” said senior police inspector, S Ghule of Navghar police station.
