The city saw three more suicides on Friday. Siddharth Patil, a 16-year-old Class 10 student at Parle Tilak School in Vile Parle, hanged himself from a ceiling fan late on Friday night.

With this, the total suicide toll in the city this month has touched 42.

He did this while his parents were away at their native village at Karad. The resident of Samarthwadi at Vile Parle, lived with a relative, Netaji Nerume, along with his 11-year-old sister. Police said Nerume discovered the death in the morning when he went to wake up Patil.

Patil’s father told the police he didn’t know why his son killed himself. The motive behind Patil’s decision is not known yet, as he left no suicide note behind.

In another case, a 28-year-old merchant navy sailor on study leave committed suicide. Samith Lad, who lived in Sangli Vaibhav Society, at Jogeshwari, was pursuing a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from a UK-based college.

Lad’s father found his son’s body in the morning, hanging from a rope tied to a ceiling fan. Lad, his parents have told the police, was depressed because he wanted to settle in the UK, but couldn’t because he did not have a job to go to. He also needed to get there to pursue his last paper.

Sridhar Kalghutkar, police sub-inspector at the Jogeshwari police station, said: “He had appeared for two papers in India and wanted to go to the UK for the last paper. But he couldn’t find a job there. This may have been a motive. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, so investigations are on to ascertain the cause of death.”

In the third case, a 54-year-old man who supplied utensils to caterers, hanged himself. He has been identified as Gajanan Murkute, a resident of Sankalp Niketan in the Dockyard Road area.

Police said Murkute was not married and was a compulsive drinker. They are investigating to see what led to the suicide.
