The Mumbai police crime branch on Wednesday picked up three persons from Dongri as they are suspected to be involved in Saturday’s violence. Sources said several more were under the police scanner.

According to sources, the three, who are in the age group 20 to 25, have been identified with the help of CCTV footage. The three have admitted to being present at Azad Maidan during the riot, but claimed that they were beaten up by the mob. Police said the three had suffered minor injuries.

Police sources said the three would be arrested only if they got any evidence against them.

The police have so far arrested 23 people in the case and the process of identifying more accused is underway. A senior officer from the crime branch said more arrests were likely and at present they were determining the individual roles of the 23 accused. Officials had earlier said they were likely to discharge one or two of the accused as there wasn’t sufficient evidence against them.
