Three men, on Friday, were arrested for robbing a Titan watch store at Borivli on July 31.
Mehraj Bin Ghulam (26), Zahur Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Lone (21) and Peer Mohammed Iqbal Shaikh (22) were employed with a private security firm in the city.
The accused, originally from Kashmir, had used a toy pistol to carry out the robbery.
A Crime Branch officer said Ghulam was living in the city for the past four years while the other two were here for the past two years.
Mehraj, who is the gang leader, used to work at a Titan watch store in Mulund two years ago.
“ On August 17, 2008, members of the underworld Bunty Pandey gang fired at the Mulund store to threaten the store owner. This incident had scared the storeowner and he had approached the police only after his managers insisted, “ said a police officer.
Mehraj noticed this and felt that the storeowner will be too scared to approach police if he is threatened.
“Mehraj used to travel to the Borivli store of the same owner when consignments were transferred,” the officer added.
Mehraj then hatched a plan with the other two accused and they started calling the storeowner and demanding money from him.
“The calls started from July 22, but the owner seemed unaffected so on July 31, the trio robbed the Borivli store using a toy gun,” the police officer said.
“We will be handing them over to Mulund police where a case for making threat calls is registered,” Additional Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti said.
Police said that they have recovered 31 watches along with some ipods and the toy gun from the accused.
