A weekend outing turned tragic for a group of students after three of their friends drowned on Sunday evening.
The group had gone to Tungareshwar waterfall in Vasai.
The deceased have been identified as Mayur Waghmare, 19, Abhishek More, 21 and Sonu Kanojia, 19. All are residents of Kherwadi area in Bandra (East), police said. The bodies were fished out late in the night and were sent to Navghar hospital for post mortem.
According to the Manikpur police, 10 youngsters had planned a trip to Tungareshwar, a popular picnic spot, on Sunday. They first went to visit an ashram in the vicinity. While on their way, they came across a waterfall and decided to go for a swim. However, none of them knew how to swim, the police said.
Not able to gauge the depth of the water, one of the men jumped in and started to drown immediately. Hearing his screams, two of his friends went in to help him, the police said, adding that the three were pulled in the by the strong current of the water.
The other members of the group who witnessed the entire incident alerted the locals, who in turn informed the police and the fire brigade.
The police immediately rushed to the spot and a search operation was started. “The incident took place around 6pm. As soon as the bodies were fished out, we informed the families of the deceased,” said a police officer from Manikpur police station requesting anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. “We recorded the statements of other group members. We do not suspect any foul play.”
A case of accidental death has been registered.
