The standard operating procedure adopted by the United States Secret Service (USSS) for US President Barack Obama’s visit mandates three-tier security. In Mumbai, the first tier will consist USSS specialists, the second tier would comprise US army personnel, while the Mumbai police will form the third tier deployed outside the places he visits.
Obama’s contingent will have two jumbo jets, 40 aircraft carrying sophisticated communication and security equipment and 45 cars, including the black Cadillac he will travel in.
With only 15 days to go, police said they were clueless about the places he would visit. “We only know when he’s coming, when he’s leaving and that he will stay at the Taj,” police chief Sanjeev Dayal said.
“We learnt that the entire hotel is booked [for the visit]. At the Taj President, 125 rooms are booked, while 90 rooms are booked at two five-star hotels in the suburbs,” said a senior officer. “He will meet Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce in India representatives at NCPA and is likely to visit the 26/11 police memorial.” Obama’s visit to Chabad House was called off due to security concerns. There are reports that First Lady Michelle Obama will visit the red light area Kamathipura.
