Two ticket checkers were beaten up by an unruly mob at the Santacruz railway station on Wednesday after they got into an altercation with a youth, who was caught performing stunts while standing on the footboard of a Churchgate-bound local.

The incident happened at around 3.45pm when the ticket checkers (TCs) – Amit Sharma and Surendra Gosain – got into the first-class compartment at Vile Parle and spotted Noor Alam, 18, dangerously leaning out of the train.

The duo approached Alam and on finding out that he was carrying a second-class ticket took him to the stationmaster’s cabin at Santacruz station.

According to Western Railway (WR) officials, Alam created a ruckus at the station and even banged his forehead against a glass frame in the cabin.

As Alam started bleeding, his friends, who were traveling in the adjacent second-class compartment and had got down at Santacruz, started beating up the TCs.

“The youngster created ruckus after being caught and manhandled the TCs,” said S Chandrayan, chief PRO, WR. The railway police lodged an FIR before taking the TCs and Alam to a hospital.

The railway police have now launched a drive to nab commuters performing stunts while travelling on the footboard of local trains. “We have given instructions at all stations on to catch commuters involved in such acts,” said PC Sinha, senior divisional security commissioner, Central Railway.
