You could now be that lucky guy weaving through the rush-hour traffic jams on a motorcycle — and you don’t need your own bike to do it.

Two entrepreneurs have launched Mumbai’s first-ever moto taxi service, allowing Mumbaiites to hail a motorcycle or scooter for a commute.

Hey Taxi! acts as an aggregator and currently has 45 vehicles registered. For safety reasons, it is only open to men, but the company is in the process of getting women bikers on board too.

“We launched this service because we want to help users dodge traffic,” says Manoj Maheshwari, 47, who co-founded Hey Taxi! with Vikram Lakhotia, 26, both businessmen. “We’re Mumbaiites too and we know how much valuable time is lost commuting in rush hour.”

The service was launched on June 5 and is currently operational between Dadar and Colaba, with plans to expand to the suburbs next month. Operating via a GPS-enabled app, it allows users to pick between a motorcycle and a scooter, and then directs the closest rider to the pick-up point.

“I used it to get from Fort to Bhuleshwar — a stretch of just 4 km that often takes over an hour in my car in heavy traffic. On the bike, it took me just 10 minutes,” says stockbroker Aniket Bhuradia, 25, who stumbled upon the service on Facebook and used it last week.

“We offer all customers pillion helmets, disposable hairnets and wet wipes,” says Lakhotia. “All our riders are registered with the traffic police and given guidelines on speed, safe riding practices and customer service. We also plan to conduct regular vehicle audits.”

Hey Taxi! also delivers packages of up to 5 kg, within Mumbai. This service is open to men and women.
