In yet another attempt to curb corruption, Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh has asked all police stations and other branches to ensure that no constable be allowed to work with special units for more than a year.
The directive was sent after the police commissioner’s recent meeting with policemen from lower ranks where many constables pointed out that they did not get the opportunity to work with special units at police stations for years.
“There are some constables who work with special units for years since they share a good rapport with officers, thus depriving us of a chance.
Many others also get involved in corruption because of their contact with senior officers,” said a constable at a suburban police station who did not wish to be named.
The circular that was sent out on June 14 mentions that a constable should neither be transferred before completing a year with the special unit nor be posted in the same position for more than that.
“We will be following the commissioner’s directive which will give everyone a chance to work with special units,” said deputy commissioner of police, Mahesh Patil from zone-11.
Postings such as handling passport work, working in the detection team and orderly (personal assistant) of senior police inspectors are among the coveted ones.
Singh has also paid heed to the issue of the relieving process of transferred cops.
“Very often even after the transfer, policemen continue to work at the old posting instead of joining the new one Some senior officers even delay the releasing process of their favourites,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
However, now circular has ordered that once the transfer order of a constable reaches the police station and the assistant police inspector, they should be relieved within two days so they can join the new posting.
