A two-and-a-half-year old girl claimed her mother threw her out of a running train on Wednesday afternoon. A passerby found her alive near the railway tracks a couple of hours later.
The police, however, are not convinced about the girl’s story.
The police are suspecting her statement saying that the girl was found at least half a kilometer away from the railway tracks. “How can someone walk such a distance with such severe injuries, let alone a girl of her age,” the railway police’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vasai division), D. Sidam, said.
According to sources in the police, the incident occurred at 2.30 am in a fast moving train between Naigaon and Vasai.
A passerby found the girl, who later identified herself as Jyoti, lying in an unconscious state and alerted the police. He then rushed her to the nearest primary care hospital.
Jyoti, sustained at least 13 stitches on her head, back and legs but is stable, the police said. A witness at the hospital said when the girl regained consciousness she cried for her mother.
The girl told the hospital staff that her mother, Vimla, had pushed her out of the running train when there was no one in the compartment.
The girl identified her father as Janardhan and said he worked in a canteen. The mother is untraceable. A case of accident has been registered by the Vasai railway police.
They are questioning commuters who could have been in the train when the incident occurred.
