In a cruel twist of fate, a 30-year-old woman who tried to kill herself by jumping into the Shivaji lake at Bhandup survived, but her four-year-old daughter drowned after she followed her mother into the water.

The incident took place early on Thursday when Vaidehi Gaonkar left her Bhandup home with her daughter, intending to kill them both. She left a suicide note saying she was heartbroken as her husband would not give up drinking despite her requests.

“After reaching the lake, she had a change of heart and left her daughter on the banks before jumping into the water. But the child got scared and followed her,” said Srirang Nadgouda, senior inspector, Bhandup police station. “Spotting her daughter struggling in the water, Gaonkar tried to rescue her, but could not.”

The police have booked her for attempted suicide and death due to negligence. Her husband was not booked as the note did not suggest harassment, police said.
