The parents of three-month old Ahuti Joshi left the city on Tuesday after giving their statements to the Borivli police. Joshi died on Monday at KEM Hospital after she was admitted there with grievous head injuries. Police officials suspect she was assaulted.
A neighbour said they had left for their home town in Gujarat to perform their daughter’s last rites.
The family had informed the police before leaving, said Bhagwan Chate, senior inspector of Borivli police station. “The couple has been cooperative and we have recorded the statement of the child’s father, Kalpesh Joshi, on Monday and her mother, Dharmishta’s on Tuesday. If need be, we will summon the couple again,” said Chate.
Kalpesh, an employee with a Santacruz-based garment factory, told the police that three-month-old Ahuti’s twin sister had died because of complications during his wife’s pregnancy. The couple had a one-and-a-half-year old daughter when his wife got pregnant with twins. But she developed complications when five months pregnant. Doctors advised a Caesarian section when she went into labour seven months into her pregnancy.
“Kalpesh said that after the twins were born, one of them died 10 days later. Ahuti also got unwell recently after which the couple admitted her to a local clinic, from where they shifted her to KEM as the doctor had advised this,” said Chate.
The cause of death is yet to be established as histopatholgy reports haven’t come in yet, and the police will take action only after they know how Ahuti died.
“If the cause of death indicates that Ahuti died due to a cardiac arrest, we will not pursue the case further. But if internal injury is defined as the cause of death, action will be taken. We will take the doctor’s opinion on this. As of now, we have recorded an accidental death,” said Chate.
