After sixteen days of failing to identify a motorcyclist who assaulted a woman driver at a busy traffic signal in Andheri (East), the MIDC police arrested traffic police constable Sandeep Gawde, 32, from his residence in MIDC police quarters on Thursday.

The police had so far been denying that the assailant could be a cop, even though the seized bike had a Mumbai police logo stuck on the number plate. Hindustan Times had reported the attack and subsequent police apathy faced by Karun Rao, a business analyst employed with a private firm in Andheri (East), in its December 1 edition.

Gawde was produced in the court and released on a bail bond of Rs10,000. “If the allegations are true, strict action will be taken,” said Brijesh Singh, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

Gawde had assaulted Rao at around 8pm on November 16 near Akruti City signal over a minor tiff. According to Rao, after beating her, Gawde, who was reeking of alcohol, smashed her car’s windshield, and then walked off without his bike.

In his statement to the police, Gawde has said that he abused Rao, but did not beat her and was not drunk.
